Trying to get your toddler to sleep thru the night can be very difficult for some parents. Toddlers who wake up every few hours during the night are a common occurrence. There can be many reasons why your toddler isn’t sleeping through the night. What works for one child may not work for another, so it may take a few different strategies before finding one that works.

Below are a few tips for you to try:

Bedtime Routine: A routine is very important for a toddler. Set a bedtime and stick to it. Most toddlers begin to tire out by around 8pm at night and this is usually a good time to put them to bed. Establishing a routine also helps when travelling or staying over at a grandparent’s house. If your toddler gets out of bed, take them back to their room and settle them down again. Continue to enforce the routine until your toddler realizes they are not going to push the limits.

Bath time: An evening bath can help a toddler relax and make the evening bedtime routine easy. There are some great baby products on the market which contain lavender. Lavender will help your toddler feel more at ease. When you take your toddler out of the bath, give them a little massage and some cuddle time. Brush their hair, read a little story and then put them into bed.

Set A Time Limit For Daytime Naps: Toddlers who sleep for hours during the day will be awake half the night. A nap that lasts longer than one and a half to two hours can be too much. You will never break the cycle if your toddler is allowed to sleep for hours during the day. Long naps are the result of broken nighttime sleep. You may have a grumpy toddler for a few days because you woke them up. It will pass and by the time you put your toddler to bed, they will be ready to sleep for much longer periods.

Lighting and Soothing Music: At bedtime, dim the lights or turn a lamp on. Add some soothing music and sit with your child until they begin to drop off to sleep. If your toddler does wake through the night, turn the music on, give them a kiss, reassure them and then leave the room.
